Which machine do I need?

Practical guide for forklifts, aerial work platforms, telehandlers and wheel loaders at Lashing T.G.V.

Not sure whether you need a forklift, aerial work platform, telehandler or wheel loader?
You’re not alone.

Choosing the right machine depends on the task, environment, height, lifting capacity and terrain. This practical guide helps you determine which machine best fits your project.

Step 1: What do you need to do?

👉 What task do I want to perform?

Task Recommended machine
Moving pallets 👉 Forklifts – hire or buy
Working vertically at height 👉 Scissor lifts – hire or buy
Working around obstacles at height 👉 Articulated boom lifts
Large outreach required 👉 Telehandlers – hire or buy
Moving sand or bulk material 👉 Wheel loaders – hire or buy

Step 2: Indoor or outdoor use?

Indoor use

  • Usually choose electric machines

  • No emissions

  • Low noise

  • Non-marking tyres

See:

Outdoor or rough terrain

  • Often choose diesel

  • More power

  • 4x4 drive

  • Suitable for uneven or muddy terrain

See:

Step 3: How high do you need to work?

  • Up to ±8–10 metres → scissor lift or articulated boom lift

  • High and horizontal reach → telescopic boom lift

  • Placing pallets at height → telehandler

  • Horizontal transport only → forklift

Step 4: What lifting capacity is required?

Ask yourself:

  • How many kilograms must be lifted?

  • One person or multiple?

  • Tools or materials included?

For heavy loads:

  • Diesel forklifts

  • Telehandlers

For multiple operators:

  • Scissor lifts

Step 5: What does the work environment look like?

Consider:

  • Passage width

  • Ceiling height

  • Ground surface

  • Stability

Limited space:

  • Compact scissor lift

  • Single-person lift

  • Electric forklift

Large open site:

  • Diesel aerial work platform

  • Telehandler

  • Wheel loader

Still unsure?

That’s completely normal.

At Lashing T.G.V., we assess together:

  • your application

  • your environment
